About The Haddam Garden Club
Welcome to the Haddam Garden Club blog, which represents a giant step into the 21st Century for us. We’ve come a long way since our inception in 1930 when we held very formal meetings and dressed in appropriate attire, complete with hats and gloves. Today, we tend to be much less formal with more free-flowing meetings and dressed in comfortable attire, appropriate to the activity of the day.
One thing remains constant: We continue to be dedicated to our community, education, conservation and civic projects.
CIVIC PROJECTS: HGC members maintain and improve many gardens around Haddam and Higganum, including … plantings at Town Hall and the entrance to Town Hall on Saybrook Road, gardens at Haddam Green, Brainerd Memorial Library, Great Hill Athletic Campus, Higganum Green and the Higganum Center planters. In addition, members provide holiday arrangements in December for town buildings and Class Night arrangements for Haddam-Killingworth Middle School in June.
MEMBERSHIP OBLIGATIONS: HGC Members are expected to attend a minimum of 5 meetings annually and to co-host one of those meetings. Members are also expected to participate in HGC activities, including the maintenance of civic gardens.
MEETINGS: We usually meet on the second Wednesday of each month at 10:00 AM, from September through June. We offer a varied program which includes lectures, workshops and field trips.
FUNDRAISERS: HGC Members are always looking for new ways that will generate money to support our programs and projects. We participate in the Town Wide Tag Sale held in April each year. For the first time, we will have a booth at the Haddam Farmers’ Market that will be held every Friday from May through October. In 2008, we created DIGGING IN, a cookbook containing favorite recipes, garden tips and quotes.

I’ll be moving to smaller quarters, and in memory of my late wife Jeanne(a Haddam Garden Club member) I’ll be giving away most of my house and greenhouse plants to members of the club, beginning now (October 2013). Call me afternoons or evenings and arrange a time to choose some and pick them up. 860-345-4305. Clivia, ficus, Norfolk Island Pine, ferns, – some in large containers. Numerous smaller exotics.
